Mt. Pleasant is planning a special Lenten Brunch immediately after church on April 21 (Easter Sunday). Please join us and bring your favorite brunch dish. We welcome a variety of brunch foods such as soups, salads, meat dishes, desserts and other delicious treats.

We look forward to seeing you to celebrate the Lenten season.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Thank you all for your support by giving me your shoe boxes over the past years. I do not need them this year as I received 100 Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes from Samaritan's Purse when I delivered our filled shoe boxes in November. Your support has been tremendous, and I hope you will continue for the years to come.

God has blessed us in many ways, and it is wonderful to share our blessings with others not so fortunate.

 Do you have a favorite hymn or song (or Christmas Carol) that you wish you could hear the choir sing?  Well, the choir is open to hearing from you!  Just talk to Frank or other choir members and let them know what's on your mind.  It can be new or old, fast or slow, classical or jazzy or gospel or country.  Maybe we can find a version that we can do as an anthem on Sunday morning.  We'll even let you know when we  plan to do it so you will be there.  You can always discuss with Frank or e-mail to fosburn@gmail.com

Our February meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 19th at 10:30. We have much to discuss and plan for so I hope many of you will be able to attend. Let’s plan on having our salad bar lunch as usual, so please bring something to share.

In the meantime, the Charlottesville District Lenten Breakfast will be Saturday, March 2nd 9:15 at Byrd Chapel UMC. The speaker will be

Rev. Pam Baldwin and her topic will be Preparing for Easter. Byrd Chapel UMC is not far so I hope many of you will be able to attend. Please RSVP to me by February 28th.

I hope to be out and about soon. Thank you to all who have helped make my out and about sooner rather than later. I could not have endured this without you.

Mt. Pleasant Church plans to begin the Lenten/Easter season with a Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner March 5 from 4-6 p.m. Pancakes, sausage, and fruit will be served. All are welcome and the meal is free.

Then Mineral United Methodist Church will host the Ash Wednesday Service on March 6 at 7 p.m.

Sunday March 10, Pastor Erin will begin a sermon series based on Adam Hamilton’s book 24 Hours That Changed the World.

Pastor Erin will also be leading a Lenten Bible Study from March 19 - April 16 at 9 a.m.

Mt. Pleasant congregants will be able to donate to a Memorial Garden Fund “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones. An insert will be placed in the bulletin Easter Sunday with all names listed and the money will go to landscaping the Sylvia Slayden Garden surrounding the columbarium.

The Worship Committee formed a Decorating Committee to make decisions on curtains, wall hangings, pictures, banners, etc., for the church. The committee welcomes input/help from others in the church. Donna Kirley agreed to be the leader of the committee.

Pastor Erin will be on vacation three Sundays in June: June 16, June 23 (Conference) and June 30. Scott Webster has agreed to speak June 23. We will need speakers for June 16 and June 30. Please let Maren Smith know (phone 540-894-9094) or email dougnmaren2@gmail.com if you are willing to be our speaker for those two dates.

The next meeting of the Worship Committee will be held March 26 at 10:30 a.m.

 March will be an active month for the Mt Pleasant UMM. We will host our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner on March 5 serving from 4-6pm. There is no cost for the meal but a love offering will be welcome.


Also a big thank you for those who attended our Valentine’s Day dinner. It was a great night of fellowship and good food.

Please consider joining us at our next breakfast meeting or at our future events. You will find a fun group of men working within our community and our church. See Scott Webster for more information.

Mount Pleasant Gardens and Landscape

As I write this, I am listening to a CD (yes – there are still CD players!) that is titled “Gardener’s Rain” and looking out the window here in Atlanta at the rain shower. The music is calming and inspirational, but more rain??!! We have had lots here in Atlanta and at Lake Anna! Last fall it was so wet that we couldn’t find time to get started on the new beds around the columbarium. Let’s hope for some good weather for work days in March and April.

As your gardens wake up, please be on the lookout for plants that need to be divided – especially shade-loving perennials. That’s what we will need for the shady areas surrounding the columbarium. Pot them up and keep them in a protected area where they get light and rain but not direct sun. Look for announcements about spring work days when we can prepare the beds and plant.

New plantings mean regular watering will be required and that means we desperately need Garden Elves. Please let me know if you are ready, willing and able to help. Every little bit helps! Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.

Finance Committee - Self Directed IRA Contributions to Mt Pleasant

If you have an IRA and are 70 ½ years of age, then you are making Required Minimum Distributions (RMD). That means your RMD is coming out of your IRA and is being treated as current income. With the new tax rules with higher standard deductions, many of us will no longer be itemizing our expenses on our Federal returns. That can mean that contributions to non-profits including Mt Pleasant may no longer be deducted from income since you are no longer itemizing.

Now comes the Self-Directed IRA and Roth IRA Qualified Charitable Contribution. It is a means by which contributions to qualified (non-profit organizations including Mt Pleasant) up to your RMD are simply not reported as income. If you wish to take advantage of this to reduce total taxable income then talk with your financial advisor or holder of your IRA. You will get a form. You fill out the IRA owner information, direct a withdrawal by check made out to Mt. Pleasant UMC, 3091 Mt Pleasant Church Rd Louisa, VA 23093, and fill in the amount you wish to donate. Your contribution can be an annual contribution or other one-time contribution. You can even have the check mailed to you instead of the church so that you can put it in the collection plate but it must be made out to Mt. Pleasant UMC – not you. Its easy. It gives you a tax advantage. It is simply something you should be aware of as you decide when and how you wish to support the church financially. It is always good to consult with tax and financial professionals.

Pastor Erin has announced that she will be moving to a new appointment in June of this year. The Pastor/Parish Relations Committee wants to thank her for her ministry to Mineral and Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Churches during the time she has been with us.

As background, United Methodist Church Pastors are appointed to serve in the various Churches and Charges by a Cabinet composed of the Virginia Conference District Superintendents and chaired by the Bishop. Pastor Erin will have been here for four years this coming June. Remember that pastoral appointments are made on an annual basis. Typical appointments last four to five years.

Following is a brief outline of what we can expect to occur over the next several months:

December 2018 – January 2019: The PPRC and Pastor Erin prepared and submitted the Appointment Preference Form to the District Superintendent to provide our (PPRC on the congregations’ behalf and Pastor Erin) recommendations as to the pastoral appointment for our Charge.

January – February: The PPRC met with the District Superintendent as to the Charge’s Pastoral Needs.

March 3: Pastor Erin announces to Mineral and Mt. Pleasant Churches that she will be appointed to a new Church/Charge effective the last Sunday in June.

March - April: The Cabinet makes projected appointments.

May: Announcement and introduction of the projected Pastor to the members of the PPRC.

Late May: Announcement to the congregations of who the new Pastor will be.

June 9: Pastor Erin’s last Sunday with us.

June 26: Moving day for the new Pastor.

June 30: The new Pastor’s first Sunday in our pulpit.

Members of the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee are voted in at our annual Church Conference. The PPRC is the committee that serves as liaison among the Congregation, Charge, Pastor and District. The current members of the PPRC are Wendy Breseman, Albert Smith, Kathy Hanley, David Compton, Allan Lassiter, Brent Jones, Doug Smith, and Barbara Wilson.

As you will understand, some information is private between the Pastor and the committee, either due to private personnel concerns or due to timing issues, such as when the announcement of who the new Pastor will be. However, we will share the information we have with you as we can.
